In August 2013 we released our tobacco retailer audit findings, and called on the NSW Minister for Health to convene a taskforce to explore, evaluate and advise on policies for tobacco retail reform that will most effectively accelerate declines in smoking prevalence. In October 2013 the Minister for Health outlined that that the taskforce would be established and the first meeting took place in January 2014. This is a significant milestone, but it’s not over yet. It’s not yet clear if the scope of the taskforce will match our recommendations and specifically consider positive tobacco retailer licensing – a mechanism through which the availability of tobacco can be reduced.
